Background

The organisation, which is now called Aged Care Queensland Incorporated, was originally formed in 1973. It is an Association of organisations concerned with providing care and accommodation services to the aged or disabled. Aged Care Queensland assists members by promoting their work to the community and to Governments, and by keeping them informed of matters that affect their operations.

The members provide nursing home, hostel, independent living units, serviced apartments, respite care and in home care services through over 800 separate services operated by more than 300 members.

Membership of Aged Care Queensland is open to all organisations serving older Queenslanders -church, charitable, community, private enterprise, State and Local Government. Organisations supplying services or equipment to villages, care facilities and community services are also members.

Aged Care Queensland is proudly affiliated with Aged & Community Services Australia in order to maintain links with Australia's Federal Government and promote members' services at the national level.

Services

Through the Australian Institute for Care Development (AICD), a variety of educational services are offered to all levels of staff employed in the aged care sector to assist them in their ongoing professional development of knowledge, skills and attitudes towards caring for the aged.

These services include specific courses in aged care designed to address the educational needs of all categories of clinical personnel. In addition to these formal courses, the AICD offers a variety of seminars, lectures, workshops and other educational activities to accommodate the multi-disciplinary needs of personnel within the aged care sector.

Sessions have been specifically designed to address identified training and development needs and the recognised need to create a workplace that facilitates each person's contributions to assist in caring for the aged.

Background

Blue Care is one of Australia's largest not-for-profit providers of community and residential aged care services operating throughout Queensland and in northern New South Wales. These services have been delivered for over 70 years. The organisation employs over 8,000 staff.

Blue Care is a quality driven organisation, demonstrating this commitment by achieving Australian Council on Healthcare Standards accreditation status for all of its community service and residential agencies. As part of their community care services, Blue Care has 63 Blue Nursing Centres, facilitating one and half million visits per year. Residential aged care services are offered at 39 nursing homes and 63 hostels. Social and allied services are also offered, including a range of independent living units, therapy centres, respite centres and community care packages.

Life Care has been manufacturing quality furniture for over 30 years. This family based company employs over 200 employees. They are established exporters of quality furniture to Japan, Hong Kong and New Zealand.

Products

Life Care Furniture designs and manufactures a large range of aged care specific furniture products and contract furniture. A great deal of research and testing is conducted on each new design, to ensure that each product performs to the highest standard.

Special features are incorporated into aged care specific furniture in order to give optimum support and comfort to the user. Chairs are designed to be so comfortable, that prolonged use will not result in sore pressure points. Features are also included for ease-of-use and safety of the carer. For example, seats in chairs are designed in such a way that the person seated can easily be lifted from sitting to standing with the least amount of effort.

A special fabric, called Krypton, is used for all aged care furniture. This fabric is incontinence proof, easy to clean, yet comfortable to touch and can come in any colour or design. They have a fully themed range incorporating the total requirements.

Pacific Bridge has been actively involved in the development of the Australian aged care system over many years. We have been part of the process to facilitate changes to the way aged care services are provided in Australia to meet the growing demands of an ageing society. The School of Nursing is the largest (approximately 1400 students) School of Nursing in Queensland and offers a full range of courses from undergraduate to postgraduate levels and a PhD program. The School has a pool of staff with academic and practical expertise in Gerontological Nursing and aged care available for consultancy, research and education opportunities. The School has industry partners with whom collaborative teaching, research and consultancy occurs. The Centre for Nursing Research (CNR) was established in 1993. A significant research focus for the School of Nursing is aged care. The School has a pool of expertise and is an active resource with the overall goal of enhancing the research potential of the School of Nursing academics, the staff at collaborating hospitals, community health centres and aged care facilities, and students of the School of Nursing. Research concentration focuses on cancer, disability, family and community care issues, gerontological nursing, mental health, pain management and women's health. A variety of strategies are used in research such as surveys, clinical trials and nursing interventions, cross sectional studies and case control studies.
